The Crafty Grimoire

I admit with no shame that one of the things that attracted me to the craft are the props. Maybe it's because I was raised sort of Catholic. The candles, incense, cloths, boxes, cards, pendulums, athames, wands, crystals, etc!

What was most attractive to me were the grimoires. Too dramatic to be called mere Books of Shadows, these intricate, ancient looking tomes demand a French name. After a quick internet search, it seems there really is a difference:

"Technically, a book of shadows is a collection of non-public rituals. The word grimoire comes from the same root as grammar and pertains to instruction and techniques.Grimoires sit on shelves, to be consulted when you need them to refresh your memory of stuff you should already know. Books of shadow sit on your altar." -Labgrrl, Yahoo Answers

Well cool, that makes even more sense. We'll get to that in a moment.

My mother gave me this old ledger book in the 80's that her company was throwing out. This thing is huge, 11"x14" and 2 inches thick (300-something pages). It has had many incarnations over the years but was mostly taken for granted.

Then I saw these: http://www.brahmsbookworks.com/ Drool.

I've been looking at that site for years and kicking myself for not buying when they were cheaper. There's no way we could justify a purchase like that with a baby on the way. But when I have a creative drive, there's just no stopping it.

Welcome back to life, old ledger book. I had put a few spells in and decorated the cover a few years ago, but now I'm determined to let it be a teaching tool for our little girl. Something fun and bright to inspire her later. So I began decorating pages like crazy even if I didn't have something to put on it. Instead of just adding spells, I've added lots of reference information about astrology, tarot, spell correspondences, symbols, etc.

Pictures below (I took too many pics and I want you to see them all, so I'm going to attempt a slideshow):

Hi greekwitch,

That book is amazing and beautifully decorated! You must have worked hard on filling it with your knowledge. It's a wonderful thing to use to educate your child!

One of the things that I love most is learning. I think part of the reason I was attracted to Paganism was that there are endless things to learn. About yourself, about others, and about the craft itself. This book is full of knowledge and clearly made with love. These kinds of thngs are the true tools of education.

Yes, that is totally the best part about paganism! There is always more to learn!

Your BOS is awesome! Love all the colors, the images... This is one of the cool aspects of paganism, the decorative side. I'm like a child sometimes on this, so it's perfect! LOL I'm sure your little girl will have a wonderful source of reference in the future!

Keep working on it!
